The U nonimmigrant status (U visa) is a type of immigration status for certain victims of crime who:
Have suffered mental or physical harm; and
Have been helpful with law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity.
You could be eligible if you:
Have been the victim of a crime, have a close family member who has been the victim of a crime, or have otherwise been harmed by or witness to a crime in the United States;
Suffered mental or physical abuse because of the crime (includes physical injuries, mental trauma, etc.);
Were helpful, are helpful, or are likely to be helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.
However, not all crimes qualify for a U visa. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Office lists the type of crimes that for which if you were a victim will allow you to file a petition for a U visa. Additionally, the crime must've taken place within the United States. It does not require, however, that the perpetrator have immigration status or that you know the perpetrator.
